  1. I've been taking photos with a Sony A3000 mirrorless camera for the last year, much of them land and seascapes of Oʻahu, and uploading them to Facebook where they don't present well. To better frame the photos, this blog. I apologize for the pretentious title, but I'm trying to record details of places where I live, and through surfing, engaged much of my life.

The weather and light in Hawaiʻi are dynamic. While by industrialized society's terms Hawai'i is considered small or cramped, worthy of a CDC alert for Rock Fever, in human scale and relationships the islands are more than big enough, and some of this expansiveness forms by weather and light: Place constantly becomes new. Notable scenes come and go. Photos may map and share bits of this.

In Buddhist texts in english, "luminous" is often paired with "emptiness," the possibility of recognition within a universe without beginning or end, in which nothing is permanent and everything is interdependent. I hope photography could be a luminous practice.

A note: These are Hawaiian places with Hawaiian names and Hawaiian stories, as well as ties to living ʻohana. Since I'm a settler and don't know much, if I can find place names I'll provide them. Any references to moʻolelo or histories will have sources. Surf spots will remain anonymous. And some of the land is used by the military.
